About our Scheme
'It is not the end, it is not even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning'
As Winston Churchill said, now so many years ago, and many of us remember his words, and the Church Bells, so long silenced, peeling out the news of El Alamein.
Do not these same words apply to us also for when we come to live at Thalia we do not need to consider ourselves pensioners nor accepting the norm entering the usual hum drum pattern of old age but this day could, with all Thalia House offers, well be the first day of the rest of our interesting full and useful lives.
THALIA HOUSE
Thalia House got its name from the Thalia School of Dance, which occupied the site previously. The four houses, which were the Thalia School, were bought by Rother District Council, demolished, and Thalia House Sheltered Housing Scheme was born, with the previous owners of the site requesting that the name Thalia be retained. The whole development is contained within four wings surrounding a central garden, nice for tenants to sit out on in fair weather either around the edge in the sun or under the shade of three Horse Chestnut trees, and consists of 88 one bedroom flats offering assisted living to some 100 tenants. Lifts make all floors accessible and two scheme managers live on site whilst help on a 24 hour basis can be had through the Life line service. Communal laundry rooms are included within the rent and Analogue, digital and Sky (at a cost) TV are available. Tenants who live on the ground floor have a small plot of garden to tend and most of these are a riot of colour in the summer. The front of the building has shrubs and lawns which are tended by garden contractors with several of the more able-bodied tenants assisting keeping the paths around the building tidy.
About our Area
Thalia House is immediately opposite an ’Aldi’ supermarket and another larger ‘Sainsbury’s’ a short level walk down the road. Closely is Egerton Park a haven of piece and tranquillity where each year the same pair of swans nests on an island in the boating lake and hatch and rear their young. Through the park, and the seafront with a wide level promenade stretches are far as the eye can see with well kept flower beds, bench seats and open air covered shelters viewing sands and rock pools at low water, swimmers and the activities of the rowing and sailing clubs at high water.
Bexhill on Sea, being part of ‘1066’ country situated between Hastings and Eastbourne, sheltered by Beachy Head, enjoys a largely temperate climate within a quite environment yet in the almost immediate surroundings is a wealth of interesting historic sites from the famous Battle of Hastings to museums to celebrate the "Birth of Motor Racing" the old town with it Historic Church and old "Manor Barn" containing a collection of stage costumes from yesterday that originated from Thalia House.
At Thalia House there are two well furnished and large comfortable lounges and we have a very active and dedicated Social Committee who organise a coffee morning once a week where and when tenants can meet and chat and hear any announcements from the scheme managers. Tuesday night is darts and dominoes. Wednesday evening is bingo and once a month we have a fish and chip lunch. Regular Coach Outings are organised and Easter, Harvest Festival and Christmas are celebrated with buffets and entertainment.
