General Announcements

We had the annual Silver Surfer of the Year Awards earlier this month. And we are thrilled that the winner is a Digital Uniter – Joan Barker from Springboard (Perry Lodge). Joan received her award from Stephen Timms MP at a short ceremony at the Houses of Parliament on 15 October, and since then has been a star of press and television. You may have seen items about her on the BBC News; they made a film about her which you can view at www.silversurfersday.org/video.php.

Congratulations to Joan and all the other winners. See their stories at www.silversurfersday.org/

Thanks to Patrick of Spa for this.

Thanks also to Ray Bunnage, Trainer at Spa, who has updated the Links page. He has suggested several new links, which I’ll be featuring in the coming weeks.

Last week at Thalia we held our regular coffee morning but in aid of the Macmillan appeal. We added toast and marmalade to the usual coffee and biscuits and had a bottle tombola. Add to that Bingo in the evening £150-20p. was raised and will be sent to the appeal.

This Wed. evening we will be giving the residents a Halloween evening with soup and a roll or jacket potato for supper and a quiz to follow, both general knowledge and musical. Things get better and better here at Thalia , as after a glitch in social committee personal, we now have a lovely group who work well together.

Brian and I are getting on at the moment but will keep you posted on future spats.

Well done, Ann and all at Thalia.

The Women’s Institute is launching a campaign on Thursday together with the government waste reduction agency Wrap, to encourage people to use left-overs. Apparently households throw away 6.7 million tonnes of food a year, one-third of all food purchased, at a cost of between £250 and £400 per household.

I cannot imagine that Digital Uniters need much advice on thrifty living, but it did give me the idea for this week’s poll. And I’d also like to hear your recipes.

Bob
Those people that have followed the spats and actionable remarks made by Ann may be surprised that I should offer advice to other marital couples
1 - Treat them mean - keep them keen.
2 - ALWAYS be right.
3 - Boast about your conquests of the opposite sex.
4 - Moan incessantly about their cooking.
5 - Always compare them badly with your mother.
6 - Tell them that you love them and then they are putty in your hands.

P.S There won't be any more letters from me as Ann has just read this and I can't type with broken fingers.

No more than you deserved, Brian!
